Overview
RPG Builder was my first research project, developed during my B.Sc. in Computer Science through a FAPESC scholarship (Fundação de Apoio à Pesquisa Científica e Tecnológica do Estado de Santa Catarina). The goal was to create a tool that would enable people without programming experience to develop their own 2D role-playing games.
To validate the tool and demonstrate its educational potential, an RPG about the Contestado War — a historical conflict in Santa Catarina, Brazil (1912-1915) — was created. The game allows players to experience and understand the historical events through interactive gameplay, showing how games can serve as effective educational tools when applied appropriately.

Key Features
Visual editor for creating game maps using tiles (small sequential images), with three layers for background, foreground with transparency support, and event placement.
Frame-based animation editor for creating character sprites with multiple animation states for different game situations like walking, attacking, and interacting.
Script system with automatic script insertion and approximately 40 pre-defined functions for map changes, dialogue display, character movement, weather effects, and more, triggered by player interaction or collision events.
Hierarchical data organization using XML for maps, characters, and game data, providing portability without requiring specific database server installations.

Educational Application: Guerra do Contestado
An educational RPG was created to demonstrate the tool's applicability and educational potential. "Guerra do Contestado: O Poder dos Monges" (Contestado War: The Power of the Monks) tells the story of a historical conflict that occurred in Santa Catarina, Brazil from 1912 to 1915.
The game begins in 1912 with the appearance of the third monk and continues through the Battle of Irani. Players take the role of a caboclo (rural Brazilian) who accompanies the monk José Maria, learning about the monks' history, understanding the population's grievances, and experiencing the unfolding historical events through dialogue and challenges.
The game was tested with students at APADAF (Associação dos Pais e Amigos do Deficiente Auditivo e da Fala) following a lecture by a history specialist. Students showed great enthusiasm, demonstrating that games can be powerful pedagogical tools when properly applied.
